Warren’s Creative Color Workshop

$149.00

You want to be more creative, want to know what is possible as well as how to get more value into your project. My day to day experience as a colorist helps the way I transport techniques into this real world training course. How many different color options should you offer a client and what is the best way to present them?

Movie content on a website or social media has become a vital part of marketing any business or individual, and creating the “look” is a key part of being a colorist. As a DP or director you want to understand what is possible in the grading suite, as this will save time on set and in post.

INCLUDES NEW V20 UPGRADE LESSONS

What level is this class?

This is an intermediate course. It is more creative than technical so if you have taken my Cut n Color course, or have been using Resolve for a while it is for you. You can follow the individual 20-25min classes using the same techniques, with the same footage that I use.

What footage will I be coloring?

A real mixture:

  • Face grading with Blackmagic Pocket, RED and Sony A7s.
  • A Paradise short film with Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, Alexa, GoPro, and DJI Drone footage.
  • A section from a movie filmed on a virtual volume shot on RED.
  • Peaky Blinders re-creation filmed on a Sony F5.
  • Plus, you’ll get all the problem footage I use in the OFX lessons.
  • I will also supply a number of PowerGrade stills that will have my grade and code tree history.

Who is this course for?

Colorists of all levels but ideal for photographers, DITs, DPs, VFX artists, directors and even producers who want to understand more about the creative color process.

Maybe you need to make a 30 second promo for Instagram, a small TVC or your passion project short film that you want to edit and grade. This course will give you the confidence to offer different “looks” to your clients.

I’ve been grading for 30 years, starting in photography before moving into London’s film cutting rooms and settling into the role of Colorist. I have extensive experience in all forms of grading, from Super 8 music videos to feature films.

I’ve been using Resolve since 2005 and am proficient in both the software and what can be achieved creatively with it. I have my own DaVinci Resolve grading facility in Australia and spend time grading or teaching International Colorist Academy classes.

Class 1: Adding a reference monitor and a control surface.

If you are charging for your color work then a calibrated reference monitor is a must. The Ultrastudio 4K Mini will allow you to see a full screen color managed picture on your display. A control surface will make you a faster and less tired colorist

  • Ultrastudio 4K Mini
  • Resolve Mini panel.

Class 2: Matching shots

If you are charging for your color work then a calibrated reference monitor is a must. The Ultrastudio 4K Mini will allow you to see a full screen color managed picture on your display. A control surface will make you a faster and less tired colorist

Class 3: Matching shots

Class 4: Make the CEO look good

As the world makes more and more content the chances of you coloring the boss of the company who is paying you, are pretty high. The improved v19 AI Face Refinement OFX plugin is fantastic for quickly softening a face, eyebags, or enhancing lips, teeth etc

  • Bring in a Resolve timeline .drt
  • Match a RED camera with a Sony A7S.
  • Face Refinement OFX.
  • Dangers of copying a Face Refinement grade to a new clip
  • Ripple a grade through your Fixed Node structure.

Class 5: The Classics

What are the classic looks? They are the go to looks that have been used and referenced for many years. They make a great starting point and once made into PowerGrades they can be quickly applied and modified

  • Film Looks intro movie
  • Bring in a Resolve timeline .drt
  • Matching shots with a Camera Color Space Transfor (CST) and a Fixed Node Tree with the ‘Look’ happening in the Timeline.
  • Bleach Bypass
  • Cross Process

Class 6: The Classics

  • Orange and Teal split tone
  • The Shindlers Look
  • Spot Color

Class 7: The v19 Film Look OFX

What is the film look? Is it something we need to achieve on every project or is it just another look like the classics. To be able to grade a convincing ‘Film Look’ with digital footage you need to have researched the film process and have lots of film examples close to hand

  • Using a Film Stock emulation LUT
  • Film Look Creator OFX

Class 8: Action footage and drones

Working on all types of genres and different media is a big advantage for the colorist. Different genres bring different clients to the table. Being able to add value quickly to a story is a vital role of the colorist, it’s not just about matching the cameras

Class 9: Grading a virtual production in real time

I didn’t grade this film and had never seen the footage before filming this lesson. I was really keen to see what I could do to enhance the viewer experience. Not everything I try works but it was fun and I’d love to do more.

  • Changing the timeline settings including color space when you have multiple timelines in the same project.
  • How do I treat a Virtual grade, different or not?
  • Matching the angles.
  • Keying to remove unwanted color casts or use the new v19 Color Slice.

Class 10: The Look of Peaky Blinders

You need to explore every option and in turn do it quickly. I normally offer three different “looks” to a director. Never be afraid of doing something different.

  • Splitting a baked .mov clip with an EDL supplied by the editor.
  • Soft highlights and low contrast
  • Contrasty with desaturated blacks and “real” grain and film fogging added on the Timeline level.
  • Using EDL marks on tracks to allow for individual shot grading on the timeline level.

Class 11: Sharing your work and remote grading

Working remotely is very popular. There are many ways of sharing and getting approval of your work. Once you have fine tuned your pipeline it can be a fantastic way of working from a remote site or location.

  • Blackmagic iCloud to collaborate on a project with an editor.
  • See edit changes whilst coloring
  • Remote monitoring to share your grading monitor screen.
  • Screenshare and approvals

Class 12: Color Trace and Resolve Presentations

When a client shoots 2 new shots to be inserted into an existing master. They rightly think it shouldn’t be too hard, but know this can be a tricky and time consuming process. Colortrace is your best friend enabling you to pull the original grades and apply them to the new edit. It’s then time to share your new timeline with Resolve Presentations.

  • Color Trace to bring grades back from an old project to a newly re edited timeline.
  • Putting bars and grey media at the top of the sequence
  • Tagging your output to 1:1:1 Rec 709
  • Resolve Presentations to share your first WIP version.

Class 13: Warren’s Resolve 20 Update: Color

  • Magic Mask 2
  • Chroma Warper
  • OCIO CDL Transform OFX

Class 14: Warren’s Resolve 20 Update: Editing & Audio

  • Project Media Location
  • New Smooth Cut
  • Frame Replacer
  • Copy and Paste attributes
  • DaVinci Voice Training

  • Vertical 9×16 Editing and Color GUI screen layout
  • MultiText Title Tool
  • New Keyframe Pallet
  • Animated Subtitles
